Today is Abraham Lincoln's birthday, one of my favorite leaders and presidents from the history of the United States. The Civil War period is also a real interest and one that intrigues me.
I am drawn to Lincoln for several reasons. One is that he appeared to acknowledge his own personal inadequacies and weaknesses but did not let it stop him from leading. A second is his sense of perseverance in the midst of numerous failures and defeats. He was unwilling to throw in the towel and give up. Finally, his acknowledgment on numerous occasions for his need of wisdom and strength that could only come from his Creator. Many of his writings and speeches provide a glimpse into his faith...a somewhat messy faith; a faith not tied to any particular church or denomination but a faith that came from wrestling with the scriptures.
Happy Birthday Abe. May we learn and be challenged from your example of leadership in incredibly difficult circumstances.
